Ferrybridge Power Station Blaze – 1GW capacity out for months

A large fire that broke out at Ferrybridge C power station near Castleford, West Yorkshire on Wednesday has put out of action two 490MW generating units for some months.

At its height, 75 firefighters were on site tackling flames of up to 30m in height.

Although the Power Station was on “summer shutdown” and had not been generating electricity at the time, the loss of the two generating units at this time will affect its winter power capacity when the demand for electricity is at its highest and the spare capacity within the grid at its lowest.
