ATS Noises Automatic Transfer Switch sounds

ATS Noises  automatic transfer switch (ATS) sounds can be heard are a warning before failure happens.
Never ignore ATS Noises.

1.ATS NOISES – What do they sound like?

If you can hear ‘chattering’ this is a sign that debris is bouncing around between the contactors in your ATS. They can be metal dust, loose screws, metal filings.
Your ATS will still operate BUT it is an indication that parts are wearing and in need of replacement during the coming 12 months.
The noise will get louder unless action is taken.

Solution- How to fix?

Turn off mains supply and isolate.
Ensure and check power is DEAD.
Then take off the ATS cover and vacuum out any debris. Check for loose items.
Tighten all contacts and screws. Look for any wear and fix.

Get your local generator engineer to isolate the ATS and clean out all metal debris . Clean and then safely re-energise the ATS

2.BUZZING ATS NOISES

Loose Metal debris inside the ATS will cause a ‘Buzzing’ sound.

The Buzzing noise will become louder and needs to be addressed. This is warning prior to ATS failure.

Solution-How to fix?

Turn off mains supply and isolate.
Ensure and check power is DEAD.
Then take off the ATS cover and vacuum out any debris. Check for loose items.
Tighten all contacts and screws.
Look for any wear and fix.
Can you see any black burn marks?

Get your local generator engineer to isolate the ATS and clean out all metal debris . Clean and then safely re-energise the ATS

3.SMELL – Does the ATS smell?

If you can smell ‘burning’ emanating from the ATS then this is a sign that the terminals or some of the terminals are burning out.
REPLACE immediately as your ATS won’t operate once they have finally burned out

Solution – How to fix?

Turn off mains supply and isolate.
Ensure and check power is DEAD.
Then take off the ATS cover Check for smells and signs of black where burning has taken place.
Can you see any black burn marks?
Replace any parts of the ATS that show signs of soot ( blackening ).

Get your local generator engineer to isolate the ATS and replace blackened parts then safely re-energise the ATS

4.NO ATS Noises at ALL – Control panel dead?

The control panel has no lights and is DEAD – Nothing happening

Solution – What to do?

First – check that the 13A supply to your generator hasn’t been turned off accidentally.

Second- check to see if the batteries on the generator are flat without any power.
Check the batteries haven’t been stolen or damaged or disconnected.

Third- Check that there is no water penetration that has entered the control panel from above.

For your safety always Turn off mains supply and isolate. Ensure and check power is DEAD. Then check as stated above.

If you still have no success, then get your local generator engineer to investigate as soon as possible.

If the control panel has NO life and NO images then as a matter of urgency replace with a NEW control panel. Control panels can fail due to age or component failure
