Under European Union rules on pollution, almost half of the UK’s 13 coal-fired power stations are due to close by 2015 and all of them could be shut by 2023. This is despite the fact that coal still supplies approximately 40% of Britain’s electricity generation needs.
Without significant investment and a clear policy on energy, this could cause a serious problem with our electricity capacity already stuggling to keep up with demand.
